Use this when…
- A patient has had a fragility fracture or is at elevated risk
- You need guidance on DEXA referral criteria
- You are considering pharmacotherapy for osteoporosis
Key guidance
- Use the FRAX tool with BMD data for 10-year fracture risk assessment
- High-risk threshold: ≥20% major osteoporotic fracture or ≥3% hip fracture
- First-line treatment: oral bisphosphonates (alendronate, risedronate) for most patients
- Monitor with DEXA every 1–3 years depending on risk and treatment
