President's Message

A message from our President: The moment for bold action is now

Dr. Sarah Chen reflects on the urgency facing Ontario's primary care system and what OCFP is doing to address it.

Dr. Sarah Chen, CCFP, FCFP — OCFP President

Dear colleagues,

As we move through the summer of 2026, I am struck by both the urgency and the opportunity of this moment for family medicine in Ontario.

The data is clear: more than two million Ontarians do not have a family doctor. The physicians who are in practice are carrying an unsustainable load. Administrative burden consumes hours that should be spent with patients. Compensation models that made sense in another era no longer reflect the complexity of what we do.

And yet, I am also seeing extraordinary things. Physicians in rural and remote communities finding innovative ways to extend their reach. Residents choosing family medicine with a clarity of purpose. Leaders in our community stepping forward to advocate, educate and build.

This is what the OCFP was built to support.

Over the coming months, we will be bringing our advocacy directly to Queen’s Park, building the evidence base for change, and amplifying the voices of Ontario’s family physicians through every channel available to us. We will continue delivering the education, resources and programs that make your practice better.

Most importantly, we will keep listening to you.

If you have a story to share, an issue you want elevated, or a solution that is working in your community, I want to hear from you. Reach out at president@ontariofamilyphysicians.ca.

Yours in family medicine,

Dr. Sarah Chen, CCFP, FCFP
President, Ontario College of Family Physicians
